Nepal still reeling from devastating 2015 earthquake

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Usha Pandey was dancing when the earthquake hit. She was at home with her younger sister and brother on a school holiday, listening to music and having fun.
"As soon as the house started shaking, we ran outside," Pandey, 19, said. "The house collapsed right afterward. We're lucky to be alive. I still feel scared remembering it."
Thomas Maresca for USA TODAY
The Pandey family has been living in cramped shelter since an earthquake destroyed their home one year ago.
But the problems were just beginning.
One year after the magnitude-7.8 earthquake devastated Nepal and killed nearly 9,000 people, the Pandey family still hasn't moved back home. They're living in a small temporary shelter across the road from their damaged house, in the rugged hills of Nuwakot District, about 50 miles from Kathmandu. The family of five shares a cramped wooden shed with some unwelcome guests.
"There are scorpions," said Pandey's mother Saraswoti, 40. "The other night, I saw a snake hanging down from the ceiling," she said. During monsoon season, rain comes pouring in through the tin roof. In the winter, they try to plug up drafts with hay and build bonfires outside.

At thamel Guest house (with video)

When a woman asks a guy to spend the night at Rs.50000 (before the night in question), how can he gauge her expectations? Also what should he bring? (self.AskWomen)
submitted 3 years ago * by walkswithfire
Don't have any experience with these things and I don't want to do anything wrong! A lovely woman that has been sharing her time with me has asked me if I'd like to stay the night at her place after dinner (because of the distance between us), and I don't want to read her cues wrong (very bad with women, never been kissed, etc).
I'm not sure how to figure out what she wants to take away from the night. Based on what she has said, I know she wants to watch movies and be close, but I don't know what else. Is sex something that is expected by me having said "yes"? I don't think that's something I'm ready for... and I don't want to have given her any wrong signals. Is it possible for a guy to agree to stay the night without that? I know that sometimes when the situation is reversed, the guy ends up expecting sex to happen if the girl stays the night (even though nobody is owed sex just by showing someone else a good time). She's going out of the country soon and I don't want her to be disappointed when we're apart

IPL 2016: Respect Virat Kohli As A Player, Says Shane Watson

Virat Kohli will lead Indian Premier League team Royal Challengers Bangalore and Shane Watson will be a key player this season

Australian all-rounder Shane Watson is looking forward to playing alongside Indian swashbuckler Virat Kohli in the Indian Premier League and said he would be comfortable batting at any position for Royal Challengers Bangalore. (IPL: Virat Kohli's RCB gets Shane Watson Boost)
Watson, who has recently retired from international cricket, said it is a "huge buzz" for him to play with Kohli, against whom he had a few battles on the field.
"It is exciting to be playing leagues like Big Bash, Pakistan Super League, the IPL. I get the privilege to play with a number of players against whom I played international cricket. For example, I will get to play with Virat and that's a huge buzz for me. I have had had a few battles with him on the field and always had the utmost respect for him," he said.
Watson said that he and Chris Gayle had few run-ins in the past, but have buried their differences for the sake of playing for RCB.
"It's amazing how the world works and how life works. Chris Gayle and myself have certainly had a few run-ins throughout our international careers. The day I got picked up by RCB in the auction, I saw Chris during the PSL. That was the day we had to bury the hatchet (laughs), knowing that I was going to be playing with him," he told reporters here.
Gayle and Watson have had on-field clashes in the past. They once clashed during a Test match at Perth in 2009 when the mighty West Indian was given an angry send-off by the Aussie, and later in an interview, Gayle was quoted to have said, "He (Watson) only looks big and strong but he is soft."
Watson said as soon as a player finds himself in the same team with whom he had on-field issues, he puts everything in the back burner and moves forward.
"You are competing on the field... (and then) as soon as things change and you are on the same team, everyone puts everything aside and moves forward. I have always had the utmost respect for him as a player. So it is nice to get to know him personally off the field, and you move forward," Watson said.
Watson said he has batted in different positions and is ready to play wherever required.
"I have batted in different positions. I have opened, batted at No. 3 and here I am happy to fit in wherever I am required with Chris, Virat and AB (de Vlliers) as well," he said.

Wayne Rooney could play against West Ham in FA Cup replay

Wayne Rooney could feature in Manchester United's FA Cup replay against West Ham on Wednesday after making his return in an under-21 game.

With manager Louis van Gaal watching on, the England captain played 61 minutes for the youth team against Middlesbrough on Monday.
The striker has missed 12 games since injuring his knee in a Premier League defeat at Sunderland on 13 February.
Van Gaal said Rooney, 30, could play in the cup should he prove his fitness.
Rooney had a quiet match, his highlight in front of a 6,132 crowd being a second-half free-kick that curled over the crossbar.
Paddy McNair scored the only goal of the game moments after the forward was substituted.
United, fifth in the league and beaten 3-0 by title-chasing Tottenham on Sunday, will travel to Upton Park for a quarter-final replay which United midfielder Michael Carrick has described as "make or break"
Van Gaal said United's defence would need to improve in order to deal with West Ham striker Andy Carroll if they are to seize their "last chance of silverware" this season.
Carroll scored a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw against Arsenal on Saturday, while United conceded three goals in six second-half minutes at Spurs.
"I've seen the Andy Carroll show," said the 64-year-old Dutchman. "And I think our problem against Tottenham was also the miscommunication of our central defenders."

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany will not return from injury for his side's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris St-Germain at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini said: "He is not 100%. It is not possible."

Defender Kompany, 30, has not played since suffering a calf injury as City drew 0-0 against Dynamo Kiev in March to reach the last eight.
City and French champions PSG drew 2-2 in the first leg in Paris.
Kompany has been plagued by calf injuries in recent seasons, with the latest the 14th such problem he has sustained since joining City in 2008.
The Belgium international was present at City's open training session on Monday morning before being ruled out by Pellegrini at his lunch-time press conference.
David Silva trained after missing Saturday's 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion with an ankle injury with only Raheem Sterling joining Kompany on the injured list.
Defender Nicolas Otamendi did not train with the squad on Monday after suffering an ankle injury at the weekend but will be available as City look to qualify for the semi-finals.

Dwayne Johnson is "The Rock"

Dwayne Johnson is "The Rock" — so that means he's not supposed to cry, right?

Not necessarily ... as the actor, who's on location shooting the next "Baywatch" film, recently met an inspiring family with a touching backstory — a story so sweet, in fact, that he may have shed a few tears.

Dwayne Johnson is "The Rock" Dwayne Johnson is "The Rock" — so that means he's not supposed to cry, right? Not necessarily ... as the actor, who's on location shooting the next "Baywatch" film, recently met an inspiring family with a touching backstory — a story so sweet, in fact, that he may have shed a few tears. Shooting on location always draws a crowd and I got word that a mom asked if I would meet her daughter who's celebrating a very special birthday. Well I love me some birthdays so where is mama and her babies. Was so happy to have met lil' Sally Walker Collins, who just turned 1. When she was 5months old she had open heart surgery and has been an inspiring lil' fighter since that day. Her mama, Sarah here was so grateful we had a chance to meet and got teary eyed when talking about her baby and said something so simple, powerful and true.. "If Sally can fight thru this, then we can do anything." Amen. Yes you can. Real pleasure meeting this great family and if by remote chance I got teary eyed too when she was talking about her daughter's struggle - it's a good thing I had my shades on so no one would see. But of course I never cry 'cause I'm too tough for that stuff. I'm just sayin' if I did, I was prepared. Stay strong lil' Sally - you're a heart warrior and you have many many more birthdays to enjoy. And remember Uncle DJ is the coolest. 😂💙 #OnSet #BAYWATCH #SavannahGA

(magnitude of 7.8Mw or 8.1Ms) APRIL 25, 2016 WILL BE ONE YEAR SINCE DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKES IN NEPAL

magnitude of 7.8Mw or 8.1Ms

The April 2015 Nepal earthquake (Nepali: विसं २०७२ को महाभूकम्प) (also known as the Gorkha earthquake) killed over 8,000 people and injured more than 21,000. It occurred at 11:56 Nepal Standard Time on 25 April, with a magnitude of 7.8Mw or 8.1Ms and a maximum Mercalli Intensity of IX (Violent).

April 25th marks one year since the devastating earthquakes in Nepal. The Apa Sherpa Foundation will be in the Himalayas this April to continue their work that they began a year ago, and to expound on their primary focus which has always been education. Their main objectives for this trip will be to select more teachers to sponsor, visit the remote schools to assess the needs of each building, and meet with a local non-profit organization in Thame; Apa Sherpa’s home village. During their trip, they will also be distributing backpacks and hygiene kits to children of Nepal; the backpacks were generously donated by Thule of Sweden

SWEDEN GAINED ITS PROSPERITY FROM ECONOMIC FREEDOM, NOT SOCIALISM

Many on the left point to Sweden and other countries in that area of the world as examples of how socialism can bring prosperity if implemented correctly. In a new videofrom Atlas Network partner Free to Choose Network, Johan Norberg provides a brief, to-the-point explanation of why they are “dead wrong” — and why Sweden’s prosperity comes from free trade and deregulation rather than socialism.
“Sweden got rich first with free trade and an open economy before we had the big government,” Norberg explains. “In the 1950s, Sweden was already one of the world’s richest countries, and back then taxes were lower in Sweden than in the United States. Only then did we start expanding the government dramatically. And you know what happened then? We started losing, from having been the fourth-richest country in the world in 1970; 25 years later, we were only the 14th richest. And no new jobs had been created in the private sector. It all ended in a terrible crisis.”
Sweden only ended its downward slide after liberalizing its economy again, with new waves of deregulation and free trade with other countries — as well as lower taxes, school vouchers, and partial pension privatization.
“Sure, Sweden is great,” Norberg concludes. “I love it here. But be careful so that you imitate the stuff that brought us wealth, and not the stuff that almost brought us ruin.”
Norberg provided a far more detailed examination of Sweden’s prosperity in a commentary for the Cato Institute’s Libertarianism.org website. Titled “How Laissez-Faire Made Sweden Rich,” the article explains how Sweden came to have such a high degree of economic freedom, and how that led to its position as one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
“Liberalism had transformed Sweden completely,” Norberg wrote. “A society that used to be rigorously controlled—in which all occupations were thoroughly regulated and trade with other countries was practically forbidden—suddenly opened the floodgates of creativity that had been pent up for centuries. Creativity was now rewarded, not penalized. Open markets and a minimum of regulations meant that capital could flow to the best ideas and that companies were free to hire and fire. The old trades were mechanized, and Sweden could now export what it did best to Britain and other countries in exchange for imports that Sweden couldn’t produce as well.”

HELP CHILDREN AFFECTED BY THE NEPAL EARTHQUAKE

Thousands of children and families are still in urgent need of support following the devastating earthquake in Nepal on 25 April. Nearly 9,000 people were killed and many left homeless after entire buildings were reduced to rubble.
As winter sets in and temperatures fall to freezing, hundreds of thousands of families remain in temporary shelters.
Plan International's emergency teams have so far supported more than 255,000 adults and children - providing shelter kits, food and water, sanitation facilities and access to temporary learning centres.
We are now working to reach more children and families in some of the most remote areas to ensure they get the shelter, education and protection they need.
Please find out more and support the Nepal quake appeal by selecting your nearest Plan International office from the drop-down box above.

HISTORY OF PRASHANT TAMANG

Prashant Tamang (Nepaliप्रशान्त तामाङ; born January 4, 1983 in Darjeeling,India) is an Indian-born Nepalese citizen, singer and film actor based in KathmanduNepal. He was the winner of Indian Idol Season 3 in 2007.
Prashant Tamang was born in Darjeeling, West BengalIndia, to Nepali Gorkha parents Rupa Tamang and Madan Tamang from Darjeelingand studied at St Robert School. After the demise of his father in an accident, Prashant left school and joined Kolkata Police as a constable in his father's place.[2][3][4] In Kolkata Police, he sang for the police orchestra. His family includes his grandmother, mother and his sister, Archana. Prashant married Geeta Thapa (Martha Alley), who is a flight attendant, on 16 February 2011 inNagaland, India

According to the Indian Idol programme commentary, Prashant auditioned for Indian Idol III (2007) because his friends and his seniors, especially Mr. Zulfiqar Hasan, Special Additional Commissioner of Police[6] (who incidentally also got Prashant's leave sanctioned for the competition) told him that his voice was very good. He auditioned for Indian Idol in Kolkata and was subsequently chosen for the next rounds.[7] He received mixed comments from judges for his performances. He is the only contestant to have never been in the bottom three or four of the gala round. He made it to the top two of Indian Idol 3 along with Amit Paul. Prashant got about 10 times more votes (70 million votes)[8] than Amit in the final and went on to win the Indian Idol contest

After entering the Indian Idol contest, Prashant Tamang became a celebrity in West Bengal, SikkimNepal and particularly in the Darjeeling hills. People from Kolkata, Sikkim, Nepal, and Gorkha (Nepali) population living all around the world voted overwhelmingly for Prashant in the contest.[9] The mayor of Mirik vowed to spend Rs. 10,000 and his staff vowed to spend a month's salary in SMS voting for Prashant Tamang.[10] People of Nepalese origin working in Brunei, UK, Hong Kong, UAE and other countries sent money to vote for him in India.[11]
Travel were organised in Howrah, Kolkata in his support, some of which were attended by his sister, mother and grandmother. In PokharaNepal, Radio Annapurna (93.4 MHz) campaigned for collecting donation and the collected sum of NRs. Seventy-thousand donations were sent to Darjeeling through its representative to vote for Prashant. A signature campaign for his support was organised by Himalaya Darpan (a Nepali newspaper) in Kolkata. Schools, clubs and other organisations asked people to support and vote for Prashant, who was named "पहाडको गौरभ" (Pahad Ko Gaurav) meaning "Pride of the Hills".[12] Two cabinet ministers from Sikkim, G.M. Gurung and S.B. Subedi, planted tree saplings at Singtam to pledge the Sikkimese support for Prashant and to show the unity of the Nepalese community in Sikkim and Kolkata.[9] The Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs of Sikkim, P.S. Golay, also supported the statewide voting for Prashant.

Prashant, a constable in Kolkata Police, was supported by the officials of his department. Zulfiqar Hasan (Special ACP), visibly ecstatic with Prashant's triumph, in his interview after the announcement of the result told that he was confident that Prashant would win and he and his team supported Prashant at every stage of the competition. According to reports, a couple of policemen even stayed awake through the nights to vote for Prashant.[13] Hasan said, "Given the hard worker he is, Prashant deserved this title. He has no formal training in music, but he has been chosen the new Indian Idol. This proves how dedicated he is towards whatever he does
